Latvia's Security Police propose prosecution over praise of Russia's war against Ukraine
Latvia's State Security Service has asked prosecutors to launch a criminal case against a Latvian citizen who repeatedly praised Russia's war against Ukraine and incited hatred toward Ukrainians. The person is also suspected of illegally possessing a weapon and explosives.

Latvia's State Security Service (VDD) on August 14 asked prosecutors to open a criminal case against a Latvian citizen accused of systematically praising and justifying Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine over an extended period.
According to the security service, the individual not only supported Russia's actions but also incited hatred toward Ukrainians. VDD investigators additionally found that the person illegally possessed a high-power pneumatic weapon and explosive material.
With VDD's referral now made, prosecutors must decide on further steps in the case. The security service did not disclose the person's identity or additional details of the investigation.
Praising or justifying Russia's war against Ukraine is a criminal offense in Latvia, and VDD says it continues to monitor such cases as part of its national security work.
