Is Your Home Really Safe? Experts Suggest Rethinking Where You Keep Valuables

Experts warn that relying on home security systems can give a false sense of safety and recommend moving valuables to professional storage facilities, a practice already common in Western Europe.

The feeling of safety at home is often more emotional than factual. Locked doors, alarms, and even cameras create an illusion of protection, but experts point out that this trust can be misplaced. In Latvia, many people still keep their most important items in their living spaces, even though this practice is considered outdated in Europe.

The problem is that homes are designed for comfort, not professional security. Even the most advanced technologies are mostly preventive – they can warn but not always stop an intruder. Criminals know exactly where people typically hide valuables: bedrooms, closets, drawers, or home safes. Convenience often becomes the biggest risk.

Home safes are not a reliable solution either. Many household safes do not meet high security standards, are easy for professionals to open, and are often not properly anchored. In case of theft, the owner bears the loss. Therefore, experts suggest changing the storage principle altogether: instead of asking how to better protect items at home, consider whether they should be kept at home at all.

In Western Europe, there is a clear trend: valuables are moved out of living spaces. Specialized storage facilities in city centers offer multi-layered protection, constant surveillance, and discretion that no home can provide. This approach is now gaining traction in Latvia, with growing interest.

One solution is safe deposit box rental – storing valuables in high-security vaults that are accessible around the clock. These facilities are usually located in prestigious, well-protected city areas, ensuring both convenience and discretion. Services like VAULTS1 indicate that the market is moving toward higher standards, where security becomes the core value.

Ultimately, it comes down to one question: is your sense of security based on reality or habit? A home can be cozy and modern, but that does not make it the best place to keep your most valuable possessions.
