Virginia Governor Spanberger in Paris: 'There's no single blueprint for Democratic Party'
Virginia's first female governor, Abigail Spanberger, said in Paris that Democrats should focus on practical governance and coalition-building rather than ideological confrontation.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, a rising moderate in the Democratic Party, gave an interview to France 24 in Paris, outlining her vision for the party's future. She was elected last November on the same night as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist.
Spanberger emphasized that electoral success begins with direct engagement with voters, going door to door and listening to their priorities. Her political approach is rooted in pragmatism, coalition building, institutional trust, and solving everyday problems through governance rather than ideological fights.
Asked about the German chancellor's concern that the US might meddle in upcoming regional elections where the far-right AfD leads, Spanberger said she finds it distressing that the question is even relevant. However, she argued that Russia, China, and Iran pose greater potential threats to European elections than the United States.
She called on the United States to live up to its democratic values and set a clear example of a strong democracy.
