Volkswagen unveils Mission Efficiency concept car consuming under 7 kWh per 100 km

Volkswagen has presented the Mission Efficiency concept car, which drove 1,278 km from Wolfsburg to Vienna on a single charge. The vehicle stands out for its exceptional aerodynamics and low energy consumption.

Volkswagen has developed the Mission Efficiency concept car to demonstrate how efficient an electric vehicle can be. During a test drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna, the car covered 1,278 kilometers on a single charge, averaging 6.89 kWh per 100 kilometers (7.51 kWh including charging losses). Upon arriving in Vienna, the vehicle still had roughly 164 kilometers of range remaining.

Aerodynamics as the key factor

Much of this efficiency comes from an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.158, making Mission Efficiency one of the most aerodynamically refined road vehicles. This is achieved through several solutions: a fully enclosed underbody panel, specially developed Continental tires, aerodynamic wheel covers, and other design elements. Solar panels mounted on the roof provide additional power for the car's electrical systems.

Technical specifications and platform

The concept car is equipped with a 99 kW (135 hp) electric motor and a 54.9 kWh battery. It is built on Volkswagen's new MEB+ platform and is technically related to the upcoming ID. Polo model.

A legacy from the VW XL1

Mission Efficiency visually recalls the legendary Volkswagen XL1, known as the "one-liter car," which was produced in Osnabrück from 2014 to 2016 in a limited run of just 200 units. The two-seat XL1 used a plug-in hybrid system combining a 0.8-liter diesel engine and an electric motor, with the manufacturer stating fuel consumption of 0.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

While Mission Efficiency currently remains a concept vehicle, Volkswagen uses it to show how a combination of aerodynamics, efficient propulsion, and new technologies could reduce electric vehicles' energy consumption and extend their range in the future.
