Volkswagen Introduces Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid: Non-Plug-In Hybrids with Low Fuel Consumption
Volkswagen expands its lineup with two full hybrid models, the Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid, which do not require plugging in. They feature a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a 1.6 kWh battery, achieving fuel consumption between 4.6 and 5.6 L/100 km.
Volkswagen has added two new full hybrid models to its range: the Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid. Unlike plug-in hybrids, these vehicles do not need to be connected to an electrical grid. Instead, they capture energy during braking and driving, storing it in a battery. This reduces weight and increases independence from charging stations.
Both models are equipped with a second-generation 1.5-liter TSI gasoline engine and a 1.6 kWh battery integrated into the floor. The electric motor assists during starting and low-speed driving, and under certain conditions, the car can travel on electric power alone up to approximately 60 km/h. At higher speeds, the gasoline engine takes over, with the electric motor providing additional power during acceleration.
The hybrid system produces 125 kW (170 hp) and 309 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Compared to the equivalent Golf 1.5 eTSI, fuel consumption is 10–15% lower, with urban savings reaching up to 35%. Official fuel consumption figures are 5.1–4.6 L/100 km for the Golf Hybrid and 5.6–5.0 L/100 km for the T-Roc Hybrid.
Drivers can select from three driving modes—Eco, Comfort, and Sport—which adjust system power and electric motor operation. These new models fill the gap between Volkswagen's mild hybrids (eTSI) and plug-in hybrids (eHybrid). In Germany, the Golf Hybrid R-Line starts at €41,400, while the T-Roc Hybrid Style starts at €44,470.
