Volkswagen prototype sets new EV efficiency and aerodynamics records

Volkswagen has built a prototype called Mission Efficiency, a 2+2 seat teardrop-shaped electric coupe based on the company's MEB+ platform, using front-wheel drive components from the upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross models.

The car has a drag coefficient of just 0.158, which Volkswagen claims makes it the most aerodynamic road-approved vehicle in the world. During a constant-speed test drive at 68 km/h on flat terrain, with secondary features such as air conditioning switched off, the vehicle consumed only 6.48 kWh of energy per 100 kilometers — also claimed as a record.

Long-distance drive without recharging

Volkswagen recently completed a real-world trip of 1,278.36 kilometers from Wolfsburg to Vienna on a single charge of the car's 54.9 kWh battery. Average consumption was 6.89 kWh per 100 km (7.51 kWh including charging losses), at an average speed of 67.72 km/h, with 164 km of range still remaining upon arrival.

The vehicle's design is entirely geared toward aerodynamics, featuring a covered underbody, frameless windows, and flush door handles. Compared to the ID. Polo, with which Mission Efficiency shares its 99 kW electric motor and battery, the prototype uses over 30 percent less energy at speeds above 80 km/h. At 140 km/h, it consumes the same amount of energy as an ID. Polo traveling at 100 km/h.

Where aerodynamic gains weren't possible, Volkswagen cut weight instead, using lighter paneling and replacing the central touchscreen with docks for portable devices. Solar panels integrated into the roof can add up to 30 km of extra range.

Volkswagen notes the results were achieved without exotic motor or battery technology, but through design choices alone. Other manufacturers, including Ford, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche, are pursuing similar efficiency-focused design challenges.
