Compact design and impressive brightness

Xreal has introduced its latest augmented reality glasses, the XBX a01+, priced at $299. They are significantly cheaper than the Xreal One model ($599) but retain many of its benefits. The glasses weigh only 62 grams, comparable to a C battery, and can easily be mistaken for ordinary sunglasses.

Technical specifications

The XBX a01+ features a dual-layer Micro-OLED 1080p display with a peak brightness of 1,600 nits – much brighter than most other AR glasses. The field of view is 50 degrees, providing a 147-inch virtual screen. The refresh rate is 120 Hz, allowing use with PCs or compatible handheld devices. The glasses connect via USB-C and require no separate battery.

Compatibility and usage

The XBX a01+ works with smartphones, computers, and the Steam Deck, but is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch 1 or 2. To use it with a Switch, an additional dock like the Viture Pro Mobile Dock would be required. The glasses support multiple audio modes, including standard, whisper, cinema, and 3D surround. The speakers are built into the frames and offer decent detail, though lacking bass.

Pros and cons

Pros: extremely bright and detailed screen, lightweight and comfortable design, good speakers, no setup needed, relatively affordable. Cons: no Switch support, speakers lack bass, prescription lenses cost extra $50, requires wired connection.

Conclusion

The Xreal XBX a01+ is an excellent entry-point for AR glasses without a large investment. It is particularly useful for travel, working away from home, or entertainment when a large virtual screen is desired.
