India officially inaugurated its first indigenously developed and built hydrogen-powered passenger train on July 17. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the service, named “NaMo Green Rail,” at Jind Junction in the northern state of Haryana.

The train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches, with a total capacity of about 2,600 passengers and a top speed of around 75 km/h. The pilot service is designed for short- to medium-distance routes, particularly on lines that are not yet fully electrified.

The project includes dedicated hydrogen production, storage, and refueling infrastructure, allowing engineers to assess safety, efficiency, and real-world performance. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapor and heat as byproducts. Officials highlight this as a promising low-emission alternative to diesel trains, which are still widely used on parts of the Indian rail network.

The initiative is part of India’s National Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen production and use. It also aligns with India’s climate commitments, including a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
