YouTube to change how it counts public views starting August 24

YouTube will begin counting a view as soon as playback starts, meaning public view counts will likely rise for most videos, though creator earnings and Partner Program eligibility remain unaffected.

YouTube has announced a change to how public view counts are tracked across the platform. Beginning August 24, a view will be registered the moment a video starts playing, rather than after a minimum watch duration as was previously required for some formats.

The company said it has used different view-counting systems across various video formats over the years, which created confusion among creators. "Historically, we've used multiple view counting systems across different formats," YouTube explained on its support pages. "However, we've heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we're making this update."

Old metric survives as "Engaged Views"

The previous, stricter counting method won't disappear entirely. It will remain available to creators under the label "Engaged Views," giving them a way to track how long viewers actually stay with their content.

In practice, the update brings standard videos in line with how Shorts are already counted — YouTube removed the minimum play time requirement for Shorts back in 2025, a move that made Shorts analytics more comparable to those on TikTok and Instagram.

No impact on creator earnings

YouTube confirmed the new counting method will not affect monetization eligibility or earnings, a detail that matters given that just a week earlier the platform doubled several requirements creators must meet to join its Partner Program.

According to the announcement, creator earnings will continue to be calculated based on "Engaged Shorts views" and "Engaged Watch Hours," both of which remain visible to creators through YouTube Analytics' Advanced Mode.
