Longevity is often linked to a balanced diet and physical exercise, but scientists increasingly focus on emotional and social factors. They claim that one simple habit — attending cultural events — may extend life by almost 10 years, and it is neither exercise nor diet.

Research shows that regularly attending concerts, performances, exhibitions and other cultural events can not only improve mood but also help people live longer. British researchers found that even a relatively short time spent listening to live music can significantly improve emotional state. According to the results, 20 minutes at a concert can increase subjective wellbeing by more than 20%. Experts explain that cultural events help people experience positive emotions, gain inspiration and temporarily forget everyday worries. This helps reduce stress, which is considered a factor in premature ageing.

The benefits are not limited to emotions. By attending concerts and other events, people more often build social contacts, feel a sense of belonging to a community and gain new communication experience. Participants in the study reported higher self-esteem, greater interest in their surroundings and increased mental activity after such events. Scientists have long concluded that close social ties are one of the key prerequisites for longevity.

The study authors believe that regularity brings the greatest benefit. In their view, attending concerts, theatre shows, exhibitions or other cultural events at least once every two weeks can significantly improve quality of life. It is not necessary to go to large festivals or popular artists' concerts — smaller events, creative evenings, classical music concerts or local artists' exhibitions can also have a positive effect. The main thing is to gain positive emotions, new impressions and a chance to step out of daily routine.

Earlier studies have confirmed the positive effect of music on health — it can reduce anxiety, improve mood, boost concentration and benefit the cardiovascular system. Therefore, what matters for a longer life may be not only what is on the plate or how often a person visits the gym, but also how often they allow themselves to enjoy music, art and other cultural experiences.
