Match Group, the dating app giant behind Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid, conducted a study to gauge how U.S. singles feel about artificial intelligence in dating.

The survey of 1,000 people aged 18 to 39 found that 47% hold a negative view of AI being used in romantic contexts. This sentiment varies based on the specific AI application.

About 40% of singles said they would refuse to date someone who uses an AI companion app, with that figure rising to 51% among women aged 18 to 24. However, only 12% of that age group had used a companion app in the past three months, and only a third of those users were seeking genuine connections with chatbots.

Despite the skepticism, 64% of respondents could envision how AI might assist them in their dating journey. The general consensus is that people want AI to help with the difficult parts but stay out of human interaction.

Match noted a near-universal disapproval of actually dating an AI, similar to the movie "Her," but respondents are not entirely opposed to AI features within apps. They appreciate tools that help polish profiles, choose photos, and keep conversations flowing.

In the industry, Bumble has already introduced a dating assistant named Bee, Tinder is heavily investing in AI tools (slowing its hiring process), and Hinge's former CEO left last year to launch a more AI-focused dating app.
