Remembering the Baltic Way — the 1989 human chain for freedom

On 23 August 1989, more than a million Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians joined hands in a roughly 600-kilometre chain from Vilnius to Tallinn, demanding recognition of the secret protocols of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The event remains one of the most iconic symbols of the Baltic states' path to independence.

On 23 August 1989, one of the most striking events in recent Baltic history took place — the Baltic Way. On that day, more than a million residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands, forming an unbroken human chain linking the three capitals.

The chain began at Toompea Castle in Tallinn, passed through Riga, crossing the Daugava River, and ended at Gediminas' Tower in Vilnius. Through this act, people demanded public acknowledgment of the secret additional protocols of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which had sealed the fate of the Baltic states in 1939, and expressed their will to restore national independence.

Organisers and significance

The action was jointly organised by the national movements of all three countries — the Estonian Popular Front Rahvarinne, the Latvian Popular Front, and the Lithuanian Reform Movement Sajūdis. The Baltic Way demonstrated how three distinct nations, despite their differences, achieved a shared spiritual unity both within each country and among the three states, joining forces around a common goal — overcoming the consequences of a totalitarian regime.

A place in world memory

Today the event is regarded as a historical symbol reminding the world of the value of solidarity and freedom of expression. Documents related to the organisation of the Baltic Way have been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World international register, under a joint nomination prepared by Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia titled "The Baltic Way – Human Chain Linking Three States in Their Drive for Freedom."
