Common Amazon Alexa Problems and How to Fix Them

Frequent issues with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, such as not recognizing a voice, overly long answers, accidental wake-ups and sound playing on the wrong speaker, have simple fixes. Tech site Engadget has gathered the steps to resolve them.

Users of Amazon's Alexa voice assistant often run into minor glitches, but tech site Engadget says most can be fixed at home through app settings or voice commands. This matters for people who have built their smart home around Alexa: the assistant can control lighting, sound systems, television and security, so even a small fault can disrupt daily routines.

Alexa doesn't understand your voice

If the assistant struggles to recognize the speaker, a Voice ID can be set up. In the Alexa app, open More, then Settings, Account Management, choose your profile and select Voice ID, then follow the instructions. Saying "Alexa, learn my voice" achieves the same result.

Alexa talks too much

Long answers can be shortened with the Brief personality style or Brief Mode. The first removes things like filler statements, while the second often replaces a spoken reply with a short sound cue. The personality style is changed in the device settings under Alexa's Personality Style, and Brief Mode is switched on under Voice Responses. Both can also be enabled by voice.

Waking to random words

If ordinary conversation triggers Alexa, the Wake Word can be changed in the device settings. It can't be customized and must be picked from a list.

Sound from the wrong speaker

With several Alexa devices at home, they can be placed into Groups by room, so a request such as playing music in the bedroom goes to the right device.

When the device is unresponsive

Start by reducing background noise and checking that the device isn't muted; a solid red light ring or red bar indicates muting. If that doesn't help, unplug the device for a few seconds, and restart the router if poor Wi-Fi is suspected. Finally, check for software updates by saying "Alexa, check for software updates."
