Tyres wear out faster on electric cars, Goodyear's Baltic sales head confirms
Mārtiņš Grīnbergs, Goodyear's sales manager for the Baltics, says tyres of the same model wear faster on an electric car than on a conventional one. He cites battery weight and instant torque, with the effect stronger in winter.
Do tyres of the same model wear out faster on an electric car than on a conventional one? In a piece published by the Latvian car news site iAuto.lv, Mārtiņš Grīnbergs, sales manager for the Baltics at tyre maker Goodyear, answers that they do.
Why wear is faster
Grīnbergs gives two reasons. First, the battery adds extra weight. Second, torque is available as soon as the driver touches the pedal. The effect will be more noticeable in winter than in summer.
How the manufacturer responds
Goodyear does not sell tyres made exclusively for electric cars. It offers adapted models with reinforced sidewalls and higher load indices, which are meant to even out differences in mileage. Grīnbergs notes that carmakers try to let a vehicle travel as many kilometres as possible on one charge and to make it quieter, so wear resistance does not always get priority.
Winter tyre edges
The article also addresses why modern winter tyres less often have sharp tread edges. Such edges work only in deep snow, while on wet or dry asphalt they wear quickly. Today, tread blocks and sipes (thin slits in the tread) take over their role.
Exotic and expensive tyre sizes, the article adds, are not found only on electric cars.
