Martin Blessing, the German chancellor's personal commissioner for investment and a former chief executive of Commerzbank, has offered an optimistic assessment of Germany's economic prospects following the "Invest in Germany" summit. He spoke to Gordon Repinski during a walk through autumnal Berlin, recorded for POLITICO's "Berlin Playbook" podcast. The conversation matters because it addresses whether Germany, often called the "sick man of Europe", can stage an economic comeback.

The summit and an open question

The event drew technology leaders, including Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, and involved pledges worth billions. The podcast description points to a key unresolved issue: how much of the promised money is genuinely new, and whether German bureaucracy can keep pace with the AI revolution.

Pensions, the AfD and obstacles

Blessing argues that the German pension system urgently needs capital funding, on a Scandinavian or US model. He also discussed how foreign investors view the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In his view, the biggest brakes on Germany as a business location are the looming shortage of skilled workers and excessive European regulation. He called for an end to German whining.

Examples of rapid action

He pointed to the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and the 2008 financial crisis as cases where political will allowed approvals and legislation to move very quickly. In his view, the same speed is now essential for expanding digital infrastructure and securing global competitiveness.
