Why USB flash drive capacities keep climbing while tiny sizes fade away

Decades of denser NAND memory have made small-capacity USB drives economically pointless to manufacture and sell, pushing most mainstream models to start at 64GB or higher. Tiny drives now mainly survive in niche industrial uses.

In the early 2000s, 1GB of flash storage was a big deal and came at a steep price — JMTek's USBDrive, offering up to 1GB, drew industry attention in 2002. Today that same capacity looks trivial, with most current Kingston DataTraveler models starting at 64GB and going up to 512GB.

The cost per gigabyte has fallen dramatically over the years, from more than $8,000 per gigabyte in USB storage's early days to roughly 94 cents per gigabyte by 2013. The basic construction of a flash drive hasn't changed much, since it still requires a USB connector, controller, circuit board, casing and one or more memory chips.

Denser chips changed everything

The real shift happened inside the memory chips themselves. Manufacturers gradually shrank memory cells, packed multiple bits into each one, and eventually began stacking cells vertically using what's known as 3D NAND, allowing far more storage without a bulkier drive. In 2005, for instance, Toshiba and SanDisk unveiled a chip capable of storing 1GB while being only slightly larger than the prior generation's chip, which held half as much.

Capacities then climbed quickly. A 2.1GB Verbatim drive cost $250 in 2004, while by 2013 Kingston had introduced a 1TB model, with its already-available 512GB version priced around $1,750 at the time.

Why small drives no longer pay off

A low-capacity drive still needs the same connector, controller, board, casing, assembly and shipping as a larger one, so once high-density NAND becomes cheap at scale, shrinking capacity doesn't meaningfully cut production costs. That's part of why Microsoft's Windows installation tool requires at least 8GB of free space, effectively ruling out 1GB drives for one of the most common uses for a spare USB stick.

Meanwhile, global output of older MLC NAND is projected to drop about 41.7 percent year over year in 2026 as major suppliers shift resources toward newer manufacturing processes, which can even push up prices for that older memory type. Tiny drives haven't disappeared entirely, though — they persist in industrial and embedded applications where compatibility and durability matter more than raw capacity.
