Latvian doctor Veronika Puisa heads to Antarctica – nine months of isolation ahead
Latvian doctor and space medicine enthusiast Veronika Puisa will take part in a research expedition to Antarctica linked to space exploration. She will spend nine months in harsh conditions at a polar station with no possibility of evacuation.

Although Latvia does not have its own astronauts, the country has strong candidates in the space field. One of them is Veronika Puisa, a therapist by profession. Since her student years, she dreamed of working in space – and she will soon depart on a research expedition to Antarctica related to space exploration.
She faces nine months in severe conditions at a polar station without the possibility of evacuation, reports Latvian Radio.
The expedition aims to simulate conditions of space missions, studying the human body's adaptation to prolonged isolation and extreme environments, which could be useful for future space flights. As a doctor, Veronika Puisa will oversee the crew's health and participate in scientific research.
Such missions are important for preparing for longer journeys into space, such as to Mars. The Latvian doctor is proof that talented specialists from small countries can contribute to global scientific challenges.
