The website of the Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avīze, la.lv, has published an entertainment quiz that tests how well readers know widely used Latvian phrases and sayings. Participants must find the missing words in expressions that are popular among Latvians. The newspaper presents it as a small challenge in which the honour of being Latvian is at stake, and it invites those who consider themselves one hundred percent Latvian to test their knowledge.

How the quiz works

The quiz has ten questions. For each one, the reader chooses an answer from the options provided, and the readers are encouraged to choose carefully. The first question serves as an example: it asks participants to complete the saying "Rīts gudrāks par ..." (roughly, "the morning is wiser than ..."). The answer options are "nakti" (night), "vakaru" (evening) and "dienu" (day). The remaining questions are not shown in the published excerpt.

Other headlines on the page

The quiz appears alongside other Latvijas Avīze stories. These include the oath taken by deputies of the 15th Saeima, Latvia's parliament, and a report of two drone alerts within three days and one explosion, with the National Armed Forces revealing what had flown into Latvian airspace. Other headlines mention hackers who break into supermarket refrigerators and new ways Europe is collecting tax revenue.

The quiz is intended purely as entertainment, as a way for readers to check their own knowledge of everyday Latvian expressions.
