Latvia's new hockey generation edges closer to the NHL
A record four Latvian players were selected in this year's NHL draft, with defenceman Alberts Šmits and forward Sandis Vilmanis already positioned for a real shot at NHL rosters this fall.

Latvian hockey appears to be undergoing a generational shift, with a record four Latvian players selected in this year's NHL draft — the highest number in a single year to date.
Šmits signs with the Rangers
Defenceman Alberts Šmits stands out among the group. He signed a lucrative contract with the New York Rangers this summer, one that could bring him more than 12 million US dollars over three years if he meets all performance benchmarks, including bonuses. Šmits was selected fifth overall in the draft — the highest a Latvian player has ever been picked. North American observers expect him to genuinely compete for a spot on the Rangers' main roster this fall rather than being sent to the farm team.
Šmits is described as a physically strong, highly mobile defenceman with strong game awareness. He is capable of making a reliable first pass out of his own zone and has a powerful shot from the blue line, leading to expectations that he could make a meaningful offensive contribution at the NHL level, even though his puck-handling is not yet considered his strongest asset.
Vilmanis and other rising talents
Forward Sandis Vilmanis is also moving closer to the NHL, with expanding opportunities within the Florida Panthers organization. Beyond these two players, several other young Latvian hockey players are on the radar of the Boston, Edmonton, Toronto, Washington and Buffalo organizations, pointing to a broader wave of Latvian talent developing in North America.
