Mythical Latvian Insects: Fireflies – What Makes Them Glow?
Entomologist Uģis Piteāns explains on Latvian TV about fireflies found in Latvia, which emit a greenish glow on summer nights.

In meadows, forest edges, and roadsides across Latvia, small greenish dots can be seen glowing in the dark. Like living lanterns, fireflies flicker for a moment in the grass and then vanish into the night.
As entomologist Uģis Piteāns explained on Latvian Television, everyone has heard of these insects, but not everyone gets to see them. The glow of fireflies is a chemical reaction in their bodies called bioluminescence. This ability helps them attract mates or deter predators.
Although many know about fireflies, observing them is a special experience that requires patience and the right time – warm summer nights.
