Netflix invented binge-watching, but now it may have outgrown it

A Bloomberg report suggests Netflix viewers are increasingly abandoning popular shows before the second season as the platform faces competition from TikTok and YouTube, and its binge model may no longer suit modern attention spans.

According to a Bloomberg report citing Netflix data, viewers are increasingly abandoning popular shows before the second season. Likely reasons include frequent cancellations, long gaps between seasons, and content designed for algorithms rather than art. But the data also points to a shift in how people consume entertainment.

Netflix's defining innovation – the binge – was built for an era when streaming competed with traditional TV. Today, Netflix competes with TikTok, YouTube, Reels, and microdrama apps. When Netflix dropped the entire season of "House of Cards" in 2013, it revolutionized TV viewing. But now that model feels outdated.

TikTok was already nearing Netflix in time spent by 2024: U.S. adults spent 62.1 minutes daily on Netflix and 58.4 on TikTok. In 2025, YouTube surpassed Netflix with 99.1 minutes daily vs. 93.4. Netflix acknowledged this threat with a TikTok-like feed in April, but it's more for discovery than consumption.

Microdrama apps are growing fast. ReelShort saw $1.2 billion in consumer spending in 2025, up 119%, while DramaBox generated $276 million. Even TikTok launched its own microdrama app.

Netflix may need to rethink how it produces and releases shows. Instead of long-running series, it could prioritize miniseries or split shows into shorter segments. Some shows could shift to weekly releases, as "Love Is Blind" already does. Netflix has experimented with podcasts and live content, with mixed results. The Bloomberg report frames the issue as a failure to retain viewers for season 2, but the real challenge is bigger: Netflix may need to reinvent TV again to balance between cord-cutters and those seeking quick entertainment.
