For many travellers, the breakfast buffet is one of the most enjoyable parts of a holiday. However, not all dishes offered at all-inclusive hotels are healthy. According to clinical nutritionist Roksana Sroda, there are several products to steer clear of.

What to avoid

Sroda recommends not choosing drinks and juices from dispensers, as they are often heavily diluted and mainly contain sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Hot dogs and mini sausages should also be avoided because they are low in protein but high in phosphates and salt. Scrambled eggs prepared in a water bath are often made from egg powder, so they are not recommended either. Sweet porridges and muesli contain colourings and have a high glycaemic index, which can lead to rapid hunger. Meanwhile, sweet pastries can cause a sharp drop in energy levels shortly after consumption.

Healthier alternatives

However, this does not mean that healthy breakfasts during a vacation are impossible. The specialist suggests focusing on whole-grain or rye bread, which is rich in carbohydrates and fibre. Boiled or fried eggs are also a good choice, providing a feeling of fullness for several hours. Hotels usually offer cheese and local meats, as well as fresh vegetables and fruits. 'Every hotel restaurant also has healthier options that are perfect for breakfast,' the expert explains.

By making smart choices, one can enjoy the variety of the buffet without compromising well-being.
