Last year, 91 children died in Latvia — most were infants
Data from the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control shows that 91 children under 17 died in Latvia in 2025, an increase of 25 compared to 2024, with the highest number of deaths among infants under one year old.

According to information compiled by the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), 91 children up to the age of 17 died in Latvia last year — 25 more than in 2024.
The highest mortality rate was among infants: 34 children died before reaching one year of age. 22 were aged 15 to 17, and 13 were in the 5–9 age group.
The most common cause of death was certain perinatal conditions, accounting for 21 deaths. The perinatal period begins around the 22nd week of pregnancy and lasts until the seventh day after birth. Six children died from malignant tumors, while sudden infant death syndrome was recorded in seven cases.
