Last year, Lyme disease was diagnosed in 539 people, the highest figure since 2012, according to the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of Latvia.

Last year, Latvia saw the highest number of Lyme disease cases in 13 years. According to the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), 539 residents were diagnosed with the disease in 2024. The previous peak was in 2012, when 724 cases were recorded.
Lyme disease, also known as borreliosis, is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans through infected ticks. Early diagnosis allows for easier treatment, but delayed detection can lead to the infection spreading to the joints, nervous system, and heart. The SPKC data indicate an upward trend, with last year's total being the highest since 2011.
Health experts urge people to take precautions when spending time outdoors, especially in areas with tall grass and bushes where ticks are common. After returning from a walk, it is recommended to thoroughly check the body and clothing for ticks. If a tick is found, it should be removed as soon as possible to reduce the risk of infection.
