Prime Video rolls out AI lip-sync tech for dubbed shows
Amazon's Prime Video has introduced an AI-powered tool that aligns actors' lip movements with dubbed audio, currently limited to the English version of the German series Maxton Hall.
Amazon has announced a new feature for its Prime Video streaming service that uses a mix of AI and visual effects technology to make actors' on-screen lip movements match dubbed dialogue. The company notes that the underlying audio dubbing is still performed by human voice actors, with AI applied specifically to adjust the visual lip movement.
For now, the feature is only available on the English dub of the German series Maxton Hall, covering seasons 1 and 2 for subscribers worldwide. The show's upcoming third season, premiering December 9th, will launch with the lip-sync feature built in from the start. Amazon says it intends to roll the technology out to more titles over time.
Building on earlier AI dubbing tests
Last year, Prime Video experimented with what it called "AI-aided" dubbing across English and Spanish for 12 movies and shows, including El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost.
Other major tech companies have been pursuing similar tools. Meta and YouTube both recently rolled out AI-powered auto-dubbing features for content creators, which include an optional lip-sync setting designed to make it appear as though creators are speaking directly in a viewer's preferred language.
