SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket's Moon Crash Likely Visible from Earth

On Wednesday, a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage is expected to hit the Moon's western limb, and the resulting debris plume may be visible from Earth with a telescope for the first time in history.

Astronomers around the world are preparing to witness an unprecedented event: a dead rocket crashing into the Moon. On August 5 at approximately 6:34 UTC, the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is forecast to strike the sunlit western edge of the Moon near Einstein crater at a speed exceeding 5,400 miles per hour. If predictions hold, the impact could eject a plume of debris bright enough to be briefly observed from Earth with suitable equipment.

No impact flash has ever been recorded on the Moon's illuminated side, making this a potentially historic observation. A recent preprint study led by William Jo, a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, used high-resolution simulations to model the collision. The Falcon 9 stage weighs about 3,900 kilograms and is mostly hollow, like an "empty eggshell," according to supervising professor David Goldstein. Rather than burrowing into the surface, the shell is expected to collapse inward, throwing up a broad curtain of lunar soil extending up to 183 kilometers wide, along with a thin, fast-moving spike. The crash could displace approximately 12,700 kilograms of debris.

However, the simulation assumes a worst-case vertical impact with the engine first. In reality, the rocket is more likely to hit at an angle, producing a smaller and dimmer plume. Laurence Trafton, an astronomer at UT Austin, says a plume extending 50 kilometers beyond the lunar limb would span about 28 arcseconds, easily resolvable by a small telescope. Yet the plume is expected to be 30 to 300 times fainter than the bright Moon itself, so a stable mount and clear skies are essential.

The peak brightness is predicted to occur about 90 seconds after impact. Geography will play a role: observers in the US Southeast have the best chance, while those north of the Massachusetts-Texas line will face a thicker atmosphere that could obscure the view.

This unplanned impact recalls past deliberate missions, such as NASA's 2009 LCROSS experiment, which detected water ice in the debris plume. The current event offers a similar opportunity to study the Moon's surface composition and behavior. As lunar exploration intensifies, with NASA and China planning human missions, understanding how fast and far debris spreads becomes critical. "We're going to be colonizing the moon apparently pretty soon," Jo says, noting that ejected particles at 300–400 meters per second could pose a hazard to astronauts. David Goldstein adds that dust control will be one of the biggest challenges for future lunar operations, echoing the dust-covered suits seen in Apollo photographs.
