The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra performed Verdi's Requiem at St Paul's Cathedral in London under the baton of conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson. Reviewers noted the performance's striking emotional intensity, even as the cathedral's vast acoustic space posed challenges for clarity and ensemble precision.

The orchestra was founded in February 2022 by Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This marks its fifth international summer tour; four years ago it made its UK debut with only its second-ever concert.

More than a performance

The orchestra's purpose extends well beyond the music itself. Its members are described as cultural ambassadors, with the tour centred on themes of hope, resilience, solidarity and justice. A Ukrainian diplomat, speaking ahead of the concert, described the current period as among the most difficult in the country's modern history.

The war's presence was felt directly within the ensemble — one of the orchestra's percussionists is currently serving at the front line, as is the son of composer Bohdana Frolyak, whose work "Gloria", marked by a somber tone, opened the concert.

Vocal soloists Natalya Romaniw, Natalie Lewis, René Barbera and Jongmin Park delivered performances noted for their direct and powerful expressiveness.

Standing ovation

As the final notes of the Requiem faded, the audience rose in immediate applause. Wilson addressed the crowd, calling the musicians Ukraine's artistic heroes, before the orchestra performed the country's national anthem.

While faster tempi in parts of the Requiem created some blurring of texture within the challenging cathedral acoustics, and the string sound was less refined than it might otherwise have been, the overall impact of the performance was defined by its emotional intensity and Wilson's complete focus on her musicians.
