Latvian security service urges prosecution over systematic glorification of Russia's war against Ukraine
Latvia's State Security Service has asked prosecutors to launch criminal proceedings against a Latvian citizen accused of long-term, systematic glorification of Russia's war against Ukraine and incitement of hatred toward Ukrainians. The person is also suspected of illegally possessing a high-power air weapon and explosives.

Latvia's State Security Service (VDD) approached the Prosecutor's Office on August 14 with a proposal to begin criminal prosecution of a Latvian citizen. The agency says the individual persistently and deliberately expressed support for Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine over an extended period.
Multiple alleged offenses
According to VDD, the suspect systematically glorified and justified Russia's actions in the war, while also inciting hatred toward people of Ukrainian nationality through their conduct. Such behavior falls under provisions addressing justification of war crimes or aggression and incitement of ethnic hatred.
The security service's investigation additionally uncovered that the person illegally kept a high-energy pneumatic weapon along with explosive material, without meeting the legal requirements for possessing such items.
Next steps
The decision on whether to formally launch criminal prosecution now rests with the Prosecutor's Office, which must review the materials gathered by VDD and determine the case's further procedural course.
