Journalist Domburs: Latvia lacks open political discussion
Janis Domburs says that in a democratic society people should talk about politics, but in Latvia few do so.

In an interview on Latvian Radio's program "Monopols", journalist Janis Domburs discussed the importance of political discourse in a republic. He emphasized that a republic is defined by citizens actively participating in political processes and freely discussing politics in both private and public settings. Domburs noted that such behavior should be normal in a democratic state, but in Latvia, few people engage in open political talk, and he sees this as a problem. He reminded that politics is a fundamental issue of the state, and discussing it strengthens democracy. He called on the public to become more involved in political conversations and not to fear expressing their opinions, as this is essential for the functioning of a republic. Domburs' remarks indicate that there is reluctance to discuss politics in Latvia, which may weaken democratic processes.
