Psychology article lists nine habits that may be tied to low self-esteem and unhappiness

The website YourTango has compiled nine habits that psychology research links to lower self-esteem. Latvijas Avīze notes the list is not a psychological test, but a prompt to examine one's own habits.

The Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avīze published a piece on 24 October on a psychology theme: whether a person's happiness can be guessed from what they worry about most. It draws on material from the website YourTango, which lists nine habits that might suggest a person is dissatisfied with their life.

The source says the answer is not clear-cut, and that happiness cannot always be recognised through such signs. Still, psychology studies indicate that certain tendencies in thinking and behaviour may be associated with lower self-esteem.

Tendencies mentioned

Three examples are given. First, dwelling excessively on thoughts about the past. Second, social isolation, meaning withdrawal from contact with other people. Third, a belief that happiness will begin only once a specific goal has been achieved. The Latvijas Avīze article does not reproduce the full list of nine habits.

How to read it

The authors stress that the list should not be treated as a psychological test from which to conclude whether someone is unhappy. Instead, it is presented as a chance for readers to look at their everyday habits and ask themselves whether they attach too much importance to something in their lives.

The material is a popular overview. It does not cite specific studies, figures or expert comments.
